Summer is here!

July 11th, 2007

Summer has finally made its appearance!  The sun is shining and people are out having fun.  The kayakers are paddling around in search of the abundant marine life while the whale watching boats float around Johnstone Straight viewing the magnificent killer whales, dolphins, seals, eagles and much more.  The sport fisherman are catching good sized salmon and halibut and the yachts are anchored in the harbor.  The lakes are busy with boaters and campers with kids splashing and swimming.  Summer on Northern Vancouver Island is here!

Garth Brooks tribute

June 16th, 2007

Steve Hillis is coming back to the Haida Way Pub in Port McNeill to do his tribute show to Garth Brooks Thursday June 28, 2007.  Steve did his show at the Haida Way a few months ago and it went extremely well.  He played all the favorites to a packed pub with  a bustling dance floor.  So if you’re going to be in Port McNeill on June 28 be sure to stop at Port McNeill’s favorite accommodation and entertainment complex, the Haida Way Motor Inn.

Cheers

Not quite the same when the home team is losing

April 27th, 2007

Following up on yesterdays posting “How sports games can effect business” I’d like to add one very relevant point.  The increase in bar business is not nearly as consistent when the home team is losing.  Last night the Haida Way Pub in Port McNeill was busy for the first period but quickly thinned out as the Canucks fell behind.  By the end of the game we were left with only half the patrons who came to watch the game.

How sports games can effect business

April 25th, 2007

It’s interesting to see how a big game can increase or decrease business dramatically in certain departments.   Here at the Haida Way Hotel in Port McNeill we seem to experience major fluctuations in the number of customers we serve in our pub and our adjoining Northern Lights Restaurant.  The biggest sport for locals is Hockey.  Having said that, we are fortunate to have a local, Willie Mitchel, who plays for our professional hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks.  This has made the Canucks games in Port McNeill a bigger event than they already were. What we are noticing now that the Canucks are in the playoffs, and winning, is the increase in business in our Haida Way Pub and decrease in Northern Lights Restaurant.

The pub has several TV’s including a large 50’ and a very large projection TV that covers an entire wall.  The restaurant on the other hand has no TV’s.  So, it is to be expected the pub would be busier and the restaurant quieter as many locals would be watching the game.  However, we really didn’t expect the magnitude of these fluctuations.  The restaurant is almost empty during the games and the pub is pretty much full.  Luckily, the restaurant started doing deliveries not long ago, and during the games, has made up for much of the decrease in our dining room business.

To summarize, when there is a big sporting event on TV we notice a large increase in our pub business and restaurant deliveries, and a huge decrease in customers who visit our restaurant dining rooms.

Orca Sand & Gravel loads first ship

April 15th, 2007

After many years of hard work Orca Sand & Gravel Ltd. have loaded their first shipment of gravel destined to California.  The CSL Acadian, a new generation 79,000 ton capacity self-discharging vessel operated by CSL International Inc., was loaded at Orca Quarry on March 31, 2007 and and later arrived in San Francisco Bay,  around April 3, 2007. After anchoring at common anchorage #9, the ship was met by a fleet of barges operated by, and on behalf of, Shamrock Materials, Inc. The ship off-loaded approximately 33,000 tons of sand and gravel into the barges, which were then towed to Shamrock’s receiving terminal, located on the Petaluma River at Petaluma. Shamrock is a leading San Francisco Bay Area ready-mix concrete producer, and has a long term, exclusive supply and distribution agreement for Orca Quarry products within the Northern Bay area.  Orca Sand & Gravel Ltd continues to be a major contributor to the economies of Port McNeill and surrounding communities.
